Francisco Lindor 'honored,' 'blessed,' 'humbled' after signing extension with Mets
Four-time All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor repeatedly said following the January trade that sent him to the New York Mets from the Cleveland Indians that he would not negotiate a long-term contract with the Mets beyond Opening Day. Thus, Mets fans breathed loud sighs of relief when news broke late Wednesday night that the parties had agreed to a 10-year extension worth $341 million.
New York's game at the Washington Nationals was called off due to COVID-19 concerns, but Lindor nevertheless spoke with reporters about the contract that could keep him with the Amazins through the remainder of his career:
Lindor also confirmed a previous story and said he prefers to be called Francisco rather than "Frankie," a nickname often used by commentators and fans during his Cleveland tenure.
Reports emerged on Wednesday that one Washington player tested positive for the coronavirus and that a total of five players and a staff member would miss Thursday's season opener following contact tracing. However, MLB postponed the game and confirmed the teams won't play on Friday amid fears the Nationals have at least one more positive COVID-19 case.
It's hoped the teams will play on Saturday and Sunday.
