Giants agree to five-year contract extension with ace pitcher

Growing up a little over 100 miles away from San Francisco, homegrown talent Logan Webb has inched closer to spending his entire MLB career in a Giants uniform.

Webb agreed to a five-year contract extension worth $90M that will keep him under team control until 2028 on Friday. Webb acknowledged his desire to stay in San Francisco in an interview with MLB.com's Maria Guardado saying, "It was just important for me to be able to say I can wear a Giants uniform for a long time."

Webb, a fourth-round pick in the 2014 MLB Draft, didn't make his major league debut until 2019. Since then, he has developed into one of the best pitchers in the National League. In 2022, he would have a career year, posting a 15-9 record along with a 2.90 ERA over a career-high 192.1 innings.

He has had a shaky start to the 2023 season, though, posting an 0-3 record with a 4.76 ERA in three starts, but that didn't discourage the Giants from getting this deal done.

"I am super frustrated with how my season has started...I've got to be a lot better," he said. "I think the team knows that, I know that. I'm excited to start showing that."

Giants general manager Farhan Zaidi has been known to avoid long-term deals with pitchers after letting Kevin Gausman and Carlos Rodon walk in back-to-back offseasons, but Webb was a different story.

"I think we really just wanted to do something that was in line with the market and fair to both sides," Zaidi said.

Webb's contract will also include $500k in donations to the Giants Community Fund; He has already chosen to use the money to help raise awareness of the dangers of fentanyl.

"I know how much it has affected my family," Webb added. "Part of the reason I want to get the awareness out is because I saw how devastating it was for my family."
