Giants' Alyssa Nakken becomes first woman to be on-field coach in MLB regular season game

Alyssa Nakken became the first woman to be a full-time Major League Baseball coach when she was hired by the San Francisco Giants in January 2020. Two years later, Nakken made history again when she was called to step in as first base coach Tuesday, becoming the first woman to make an appearance as an on-field coach in an MLB regular season game.

Nakken, 31, played college softball at Sacramento State before joining the Giants as an intern in 2014. She later earned a master's degree in sports management before she was added to the team's coaching staff.

She was called into action Tuesday when Giants first base coach Antoan Richardson was ejected. San Diego Padres first baseman Eric Hosmer was the first to congratulate Nakken on the career achievement.

Nakken first appeared as an on-field coach in an exhibition game in July 2020 prior to the start of the pandemic-shortened 2020 season. Her title with the Giants is "Major League Assistant Coach" and she serves as a general assistant on Gabe Kapler's staff.
