Giants call up top prospect as offense continues to struggle

The San Francisco Giants called up their top prospect, shortstop Marco Luciano, on Wednesday, the San Francisco Chronicle reported

Luciano has been in the organization since he was 17,  and his debut is the most-anticipated debut for the organization in the Farhan Zaidi era. At 21, Luciano climbed quickly from Double-A to Triple-A this season. In only six games with the Sacramento Rivercats in Triple-A, Luciano went 7-for-24 with two home runs and an on-base percentage of .370.

The Giants, who find themselves in tight division and wild-card races in the National League, were on a six-game losing streak before defeating the Oakland A’s 2-1 on Tuesday night. Over that span, the offense, which has been producing all season, hit a wall. San Francisco has failed to score over two runs in six of their last seven games.

The Giants have missed production from the middle infield with the injuries to second baseman Thairo Estrada and shortstop Brandon Crawford. By calling up Luciano, the organization hopes he can provide a spark to push San Francisco over the hump while their middle infielders rehab from injury.

It’ll be interesting to see what the exciting, young prospect can bring to a hopeful contender. So far this season, the younger players (including Patrick Bailey and Luis Matos) have played well, improving the Giants chances for the postseason. Whether Luciano is up for five games or the rest of the season, it is an exciting time for the franchise.

Luciano will play shortstop and bat eighth on Wednesday night against the A's in his MLB debut.
