Heading into Opening Day, the Chicago Cubs still seem to have some questions about who their starting third baseman is going to be.

In all likelihood, they're going to give their young slugger, Christopher Morel, every opportunity to become the starter at third for the foreseeable future, even saying they are ok with him making some mistakes.

That's an interesting statement considering the defensive emphasis that the Cubs want to have across their infield.

But, finding a position for Morel should also be a top priority as this would open up the designated hitter role for many players to rotate there throughout the season.

The two others in the mix, Patrick Wisdom and Nick Madrigal, are either returning from injury or are missing time because of an injury.

This should give Morel the inside track to be named the starter for Opening Day.

However, another option has just become available after the San Francisco Giants released J.D. Davis following him not being claimed off waivers.

Chicago was previously linked to the slugging third baseman after he's coming off a year where he slashed .248/.325/.413 with 18 home runs and 69 RBI.

Since the Giants released him so late in the process, they'll owe him a portion of his salary during the upcoming season, something that could be attractive to the Cubs when deciding if they should bring him in.

At the very least, Davis would be a good platoon piece to pair with Morel.

Wisdom seems to have become a bench player at this point in his career and likely will rotate time between third and first base.

Madrigal's injury issues continue to pop up and it's hard to rely on his availability.

Davis would give them another option at the hot corner, especially if Morel has extended struggles that limits how often Chicago can play him in the field.
