The San Francisco Giants were one of baseball’s best stories in 2021.
They exceeded all reasonable preseason expectations and won 107 games in the regular season en route to the NL West division title.
Unfortunately, the club’s miracle campaign came to an end in the NLDS at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers.
Getting eliminated from the postseason always hurts, but in the Giants’ case this past season, it was arguably even more devastating than usual.
That’s because almost the entirety of San Francisco’s starting rotation — which was perhaps the team’s biggest strength in 2021 — was set to hit free agency this offseason.
Once free agency opened, Logan Webb was the Giants’ only starter from 2021 who was guaranteed to return to the team in 2022.
It seemed like San Francisco’s missed its chance to win a title in 2021 when its rotation was still intact.
But over the past week or so, the organization has made it clear that it’s not going anywhere.
The Giants have already re-signed two key pieces of their rotation from 2021, and according to a report, they’re also in the mix for free-agent hurler Marcus Stroman.
San Francisco is on the verge of contending again next season.
If the club can sign Stroman, it’ll put the league on notice.
What Would The Giants Be Getting In Stroman?
First of all, signing Stroman won’t be easy.
It sounds like there is a very competitive market for the righty, which comes as no surprise.
He was one of the best starters in baseball in 2021.
Over 32 starts, he posted a 3.02 ERA.
He complemented that mark with a 133 ERA+, 3.49 FIP, and 1.15 WHIP.
No one really knew what to expect from Stroman in 2021 after he opted out of the 2020 season, but he silenced the doubters in a big way.
After his stellar 2021 season, the 30-year-old now has a 3.12 ERA over 65 starts since the beginning of the 2019 season, and he has a career ERA of 3.63.
There’s a reason he’s being regarded as one of the best free-agent pitchers available this offseason.
How Would San Francisco’s Rotation Look With Stroman?
As mentioned, the Giants have already re-signed two key arms this offseason.
Those guys are Anthony DeSclafani and Alex Wood.
When you factor in Webb, the Giants already have a really nice trio in place.
But if they were to add Stroman, their rotation would boast four fantastic arms.
A four-headed monster of DeSclafani/Wood/Webb/Stroman (in no particular order) would be very intimidating.
Obviously, the Giants would need to find someone to fill in that No. 5 spot, but there are plenty of mid-tier free agents who could be perfect for that role.
Rich Hill, Corey Kluber, and Danny Duffy are a few guys who come to mind, and any of those guys would likely come at a reasonable price.
The bottom line is this: If San Francisco wins the Stroman sweepstakes, the club will have successfully turned a virtually empty rotation (consisting of only Webb) into a fantastic staff (featuring four great arms).
That would be no small accomplishment.
We’ll see if the Giants do indeed land Stroman’s services.
