Giants SP Anthony DeSclafani to have ankle surgery, likely out for season

Some tough news for the San Francisco Giants on Monday, as manager Gabe Kapler told reporters that starting pitcher Anthony DeSclafani will have ankle surgery on July 12.

Although the Giants haven't made a formal announcement yet, it appears very likely DeSclafani will be out for the rest of the season.

DeSclafani has only pitched five games this season as he has tried to work through issues with his ankle that emerged late last season. The 32-year-old is 0-2 on the season with a 9.95 ERA after going 13-7 last season with a 3.17 earned run average.

"It wasn’t really an issue in the offseason," DeSclafani said of the lingering injury, via The San Francisco Chronicle. "I was just resting it. I started throwing, and everything was fine, honestly, until the volume increased in spring training and it started to become an issue again. I just couldn’t believe it came back up and I was dealing with this again because I thought rest was going to be the answer and I was feeling good up until camp."

Meanwhile, the Giants continue to struggle with consistency as the All-Star break gets closer. They have had difficulty stringing wins together after a hot start to their season and is teetering just over .500. The Giants currently sit in third place in the NL West, 5.5 games behind the San Diego Padres and 8.5 games behind the Los Angeles Dodgers.
