Gleyber Torres becomes seventh-youngest Yankee to reach career milestone

Times haven't always been smooth in New York for Gleyber Torres but the second baseman continues to work his name into the franchise's record books. Torres homered on Monday night, his second this season. The shot marked the 100th of his career.

Torres is the seventh-youngest player in Yankees history to reach the century mark.

Mantle, Mattingly, DiMaggio. These are Yankees legends Torres can now call company.

Signed as an international amateur free agent by the Chicago Cubs in 2013, Torres was the key piece in the Aroldis Chapman trade in 2016. Two years later, he became a regular in the Yankees lineup, batting .271/.340/.480 with 24 home runs en route to finishing third in Rookie of the Year voting.

Torres has been mostly consistent since, with the exception of the 2020 and 2021 seasons. Much of that has been credited to the team's efforts to move Torres over to shortstop. Defensive missteps aside, his offensive production and power cratered.

Most of that production returned last season with Torres returning to second base primarily. Even still, questions arose over the winter about his future with New York. The Yankees were rumored to be open to trading Torres but never appeared close to a deal. The subject could arise again, particularly as Anthony Volpe continues to thrive, DJ LeMahieu shows he's healthy, and Oswald Peraza joins the infield mix.
