Marco Gonzales surrendered four home runs while on the mound for the Pittsburgh Pirates in their 12-0 blowout loss to the New York Yankees at George M. Steinbrenner Field on Wednesday.
Three of the four blasts Gonzales yielded in his outing came off the bat of Giancarlo Stanton. In the bottom of the first, Stanton tattooed a two-run homer to center and quickly struck again with a grand slam the following inning. The pair of home runs combined to measure over 900 feet in total.
Stanton hit a measly 426-foot solo home run in the fourth inning to put the Yankees (11-14-1) ahead 9-0.
Anthony Volpe also connected on a home run against Gonzales, a two-run shot in the first inning. Aaron Judge opened the scoring against the Pirates’ left-hander with an RBI-double.
Things didn’t get much better for the Pirates (11-14-1) once Quinn Priester took the mound in the sixth. The Yankees pounced for three runs against the right-hander. Stanton delivered again, this time on a sacrifice fly to five New York double-digit runs and a 10-0 lead. Anthony Rizzo later doubled home a run and Trent Grisham scored on a Priester wild pitch.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES
- Marco Gonzales’ final line read 3.2 innings, 10 hits, nine runs, two walks and one strikeout.
- Quinn Priester settled in after a rocky start to his appearance. He went three innings, allowed three runs on four hits and two walks and struck out three.
- Ke’Bryan Hayes and Oneil Cruz each went 1 for 3 with a double. It was Hayes’ third two-bagger of the spring and Cruz’s first.
- Andrew McCutchen made his fifth appearance of the spring and finished 1 for 3. He’s batting .417 in Grapefruit League play. The only other Pirates’ player with a hit was Bryan Reynolds, who singled.
