Guardians place Aaron Civale on IL with sprained wrist

Wednesday night was rough for the Cleveland Guardians, as they lost a second straight home game to the division-rival Chicago White Sox en route to falling back below .500 and to 43-44 on the season.

Cleveland suffered a different frustrating setback during that defeat.

Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), the Guardians placed right-handed starting pitcher Aaron Civale on the 15-day injured list with a sprained right wrist ahead of Thursday's series-opener versus the Detroit Tigers. In a corresponding roster move, Cleveland selected the contract of lefty Tanner Tully from Triple-A Columbus.

It's yet another blow for Civale, who missed time this spring with a strained glute muscle. The 27-year-old tossed 20 pitches in one inning of work against the White Sox on Wednesday but then reported wrist discomfort to the training staff, and manager Terry Francona later confirmed the issue had been bothering Civale before his latest appearance.

In total, Civale is 2-5 with a 6.17 ERA across 12 starts for the Guardians this season.

The upcoming four-game tilt versus Detroit could prove to be massive as it pertains to Cleveland's hopes for the second half of the current season and beyond. Depending on what happens over the next few weeks, the Guardians could be buyers or sellers before the Aug. 2 trade deadline.

The Guardians began Thursday trailing the first-place Minnesota Twins by four-and-a-half games in the American League Central standings.
