Guardians place Owen Miller, Cal Quantrill, Anthony Castro on COVID-19 list

The Cleveland Guardians somewhat curiously had Tuesday evening's home game against the Chicago White Sox postponed even though neither rain nor snow threatened downtown Cleveland throughout the primetime hours.

Before those clubs met for a Wednesday doubleheader, Cleveland placed three players on the COVID-19 injured list.

According to The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), first baseman Owen Miller, right-handed starter Cal Quantrill and right-handed relief pitcher Anthony Castro all reported COVID-19 symptoms on Tuesday and ultimately tested positive for the virus.

Additionally, Guardians manager Terry Francona confirmed that infielder Yu Chang also tested positive for the coronavirus. Chang was added to the IL this past Friday for unexplained reasons.

Fortunately, Francona told reporters before the opening game of the doubleheader that all of the players felt "fine."

"I don't know that we're out of the woods yet," Francona remarked about the feared COVID-19 outbreak within the squad. "I hope we are, but we don't know yet. Unfortunately, in a clubhouse, there is a lot of close contact."

As Mandy Bell noted for the league's website, the Guardians and White Sox opened the week with back-to-back postponements blamed on wintery conditions in the Cleveland area.

"Playing tonight, you start to worry about hurting somebody or playing the game when you shouldn’t," Francona said Tuesday. "Part of it was some of [the ground] might've been frozen, where if it did thaw, with the wind that was going to kick up, it was going to be pretty miserable. To the point where you start to worry about your guys."
