James McCann uncertain when he'll return to Mets' lineup

New York Mets catcher James McCann said Saturday that he's uncertain of when he'll return to the lineup despite his rehab being "right on track," according to SNY.

"We have targets, but there are certain things I have to accomplish," he said. "The way I view it, as soon as I'm able to get out here and help, that's what I'm gonna do."

McCann was placed on the 10-day injured list with back spasms on Aug. 20, retroactive to Aug. 17. He hit in a field setting for the second time on Aug. 27 and caught a second bullpen on Aug. 28.

Before his injury, McCann was struggling at the plate, going 4 for his last 23 (.174/.208/.174) and 9 for his last 50 overall (.180/.212/.260).

The Mets signed McCann to a four-year, $40 million deal in the offseason, and his first year in Queens has been disappointing. In 99 games, he's hitting .240 with nine home runs and 35 RBI.

However, New York has struggled as a whole this season. Entering Saturday, the Mets were third in the National League East with a 61-67 record, 8.5 games behind the division-leading Atlanta Braves, and appear to be headed for their fifth straight season without a playoff appearance.

Earlier this month, Mets owner Steve Cohen called out the club's "unproductive" hitters. His comments haven't made a difference, however, as New York continues to struggle at the plate.
