On Wednesday, Diamondbacks’ GM Mike Hazen announced that MLB Pipeline’s #11 ranked prospect, Jordan Lawlar, will undergo thumb surgery, causing him to miss a couple of months.
The injury reportedly occurred when Jordan had a ground ball bounce off his glove, causing him to pick up the ball with his hand, ultimately jamming it into the ground.
Mike Hazen stated, “It was unfortunate. I mean, it was just a freak playing injury.”
While Lawlar was not slated for the Diamondbacks‘ Opening Day roster, there was a high probability of him receiving a call-up sometime during the season.
Lawlar, who was drafted 6th overall in the 2021 draft by Arizona, made his major league debut last September. He then joined the Diamondbacks in the postseason, mainly contributing as a pinch runner.
Initially, it appeared the D-backs might include Lawlar in the Opening Day roster. However, due largely to Blaze Alexander’s outstanding performance in spring camp, the 21-year-old was demoted to the minors around a week ago.
In Triple-A Reno last season, Lawlar boasted a .358 batting average through 80 plate appearances. Overall, across AA and AAA in 2023, he accumulated 20 home runs, registered a .874 OPS, and scored 95 runs in 105 games.
Shaun Larkin, the Arizona Diamondbacks’ farm director, indicated that Lawlar should be able to return to full baseball activities in 8-10 weeks, according to Nick Piecoro at the Arizona Republic.
