New St. Louis Cardinals starter Jordan Montgomery was as shocked as the rest of us yesterday when he discovered that the New York Yankees had traded him.

Heading back to New York in this trade is Gold Glove center fielder Harrison Bader.

The deal was completed with minutes to spare before the 6 p.m. Eastern Time deadline.

St. Louis fills a hole in their rotation with this acquisition.

But when Montgomery found out about the trade, he was quite shocked.

On Twitter, Yankees insider Sweeny Murti said that Montgomery was “close to tears” when he learned of the trade.

“I’m pretty shocked,” Montgomery said. “This is my family. This is all I know.”

Monty Says Goodbye To New York

It’s always hard for a player to get traded away from the only organization he’s ever known during his career, and such can be said for Montgomery, who has been with the Yankees ever since he came up in 2017.

Trade deadlines are always such a stressful time for that very reason.

But when asked about what kind of pitcher the Cardinals would be getting, Montgomery stated that they’d be getting a guy who works hard for them and “will die on the mound.”

This is what you want to hear if you’re a Cardinals fan.

But it’s easy to tell that he’s upset about leaving the only organization he’s ever known, and it’s understandable as to why.

It’s what he’s been used to for so long.

Now, everything has changed for him.

At the end of the day though, he’ll fit in quite nicely with the rest of the Cardinals starters.

He’ll give St. Louis some important innings coverage, picking up the slack left by the injuries to Jack Flaherty and Steven Matz.
