Look: MLB app malfunction sparks nostalgia for fans

A technological malfunction with the MLB app helped start the week off in interesting fashion. Fans who had final score notifications enabled for teams were, in fact, sent final scores. However, these scores were from decades ago.

The malfunction, although seemingly just weird, was made even weirder by the fact that the Expos were included in push notifications. One game featuring the Expos was a 1972 Montreal win over the Atlanta Braves.

The Braves lineup on the August day included Hank Aaron and Dusty Baker, according to Baseball Reference. Most of the games in the glitch are from the early 1970s, meaning plenty of Expos games were featured. It was an interesting reminder of the relocated franchise.

The strange glitch incited varied reactions on Twitter, from confusion to amusement. There was also a host of jokes made, including plenty of jabs toward the Padres, who were reminded of a multitude of early '70s losses in the midst of an already painful five-game losing streak in 2023.

While the notifications were almost surely an accident, it was a fun reminder of a different era of baseball. Seeing box scores where each team only uses one or two pitchers is uncommon nowadays—these games from the '70s are littered with them.
