Luis Severino makes dubious Yankees history after another poor outing

New York Yankees hurler Luis Severino struggled again in the first inning Friday, making some dubious franchise history.

Tagged for three runs in the first against the Houston Astros, Severino joined Ron Guidry (1987) and Joe Page (1944) as the only Yankee pitchers to allow 10 or more earned runs over two consecutive starts, per ESPN Stats and Info

After another rough first inning, Severino's night didn't get better. The 29-year-old lasted only four innings, giving up five earned runs off five hits in a 7-3 Yankees loss. Severino left the game ahead of the fifth to a chorus of boos. Then, defeated, Severino sat on the far end of the Yankee bench before several teammates and coaches came over to console him.

Severino's abysmal outing comes only days after the Baltimore Orioles victimized him for seven first-inning runs, ultimately tallying nine runs off 10 hits over just 3.1 innings.

Following Friday's loss, Severino told reporters his first-inning difficulties are mental and physical. However, like the Yankees, Severino is seemingly searching for answers.

"I'm not gonna lie, every time I give up a home run or a run in the first inning it's like, 'Jesus Christ, what am I doing?'" Severino said via SNY

The 2023 campaign has been challenging for Severino overall. He now sports a record of 2-5 over 13 starts while carrying a robust 7.49 ERA. Meanwhile, opposing hitters are batting .327 against him.

Severino has earned only one win over his last six starts, allowing 30 earned runs over 21.2 innings pitched. With seemingly no answers for Severino's downswing, manager Aaron Boone said, "Everything's on the table" when asked if a potential move to the bullpen could be on the horizon for the right-hander.
