Mariners designate 2019 All-Star Daniel Vogelbach for assignment

First baseman and designated hitter Daniel Vogelbach enjoyed a career season in 2019 and made his first All-Star squad. Roughly 13 months after that exhibition game, the Seattle Mariners designated the 27-year-old for assignment.

As noted by the Associated Press (h/t ESPN), pitchers seemed to adjust to Vogelbach's unprecedented power following last year's All-Star break. He hit .162 with nine home runs over the second half of the campaign after he entered All-Star week with 21 homers and 51 RBI.

Vogelbach showed no signs of turning things around anytime soon. Across 18 outings this summer, he hit .094/.250/.226 with two home runs, four RBI, five hits and 13 strikeouts. His last knock of the campaign came on Aug. 12 versus the Texas Rangers.

Manager Scott Servais told reporters the move was made, in part, to award "at-bats and opportunities to some other players" who weren't slumping during the pandemic-shortened campaign.

Vogelbach would report to Seattle's alternate training site if he clears waivers, as expected.
