Mariners place reliever Ken Giles on 15-day IL with right shoulder tightness

The Seattle Mariners placed right-handed reliever Ken Giles on the 15-day injured list on Saturday in a bevy of transactions.

Giles heads to the IL with right shoulder tightness just weeks since making his season debut. He left his appearance on Friday against the Toronto Blue Jays after facing just two batters.

The 31-year-old missed all of 2021 after undergoing Tommy John surgery.

Giles made his first appearance for the Mariners on June 21. He allowed only one hit over five appearances, striking out six of 18 batters faced.

The Mariners also placed reliever Erik Swanson on the paternity list and designated catcher Andrew Knapp for assignment on Saturday.

Swanson has been impressive out of the pen for the Mariners this season, posting a 0.79 ERA in 22.2 innings.

Knapp saw just four at-bats for the Mariners this season, striking out three times.

Filling the roster spots, Seattle activated Luis Torrens from the 10-day IL and re-called pitchers Matt Brash and Matt Festa from Triple-A Tacoma.

Before a shoulder injury landed him on the IL, Torrens batted .222/.280/.241 with eight RBI in 36 games.

Brash went 1-3 with a 7.65 ERA in five starts with the Mariners earlier this season. He went 0-1 with a 3.46 ERA in 26.0 innings with Tacoma.

Festa has pitched in 21 games for the Mariners this season, posting a 4.35 ERA in 20.2 innings. In six games for Tacoma, Festa had a 1-0 record with a 2.70 ERA in 6.2 innings.
