Eury Pérez, the right-handed pitcher for the Miami Marlins, is set to undergo Tommy John surgery, sidelining him for the remainder of the 2024 season.
This unfortunate news was officially announced by the team on Thursday.
Given that the recovery period for Tommy John surgery typically spans about 14 months, it’s unlikely that Eury Pérez will return to the big-league diamond before June 2025.
Pérez’s Career and Injury
Pérez, who is due to celebrate his 21st birthday on April 15, has been grappling with elbow pain for several weeks.
Despite this setback, his Major League Baseball (MLB) career, which kicked off last year, has been impressive.
Over the course of 19 games, he maintained a 3.15 ERA (142 ERA+) and achieved a 3.48 strikeout-to-walk ratio in 91 innings.
His performance even earned him a seventh-place finish in the National League Rookie of the Year Award voting.
People widely regarded Pérez, with his formidable fastball and breaking balls, as the next star pitcher for Miami.
Marlins’ Efforts and Challenges
The Marlins have been cautious with Pérez, even going so far as to reassign him to the minors at one point last year to prevent him from overworking.
However, despite these efforts, they still slated Pérez for elbow surgery.
Marlins’ Rough Start to the Season
The Marlins have had a rocky start to this season, suffering losses in their first seven games.
This marks the first instance of a team making the playoffs one year, only to commence the subsequent season with such a poor performance.
Injuries Plaguing the Marlins
Pérez is not the only Marlins pitcher battling injury.
Sandy Alcantara, Edward Cabrera, and Braxton Garrett are also on the injured list. Notably, Alcantara is out for the year following his own Tommy John surgery.
Changes to the Marlins’ Pitching Lineup
In response to these challenges, the Marlins made some adjustments to their pitching lineup on Thursday.
The team removed Kent Emanuel from the roster and called up Matt Andriese from their Triple-A team in Jacksonville.
