Marlins exercise option on manager Don Mattingly

It appears Miami Marlins manager Don Mattingly won't have to look for work at any point over the next 15 months or so.

According to an ESPN piece, Marlins general manager Kim Ng confirmed during Thursday's game against the Los Angeles Dodgers that the club exercised the mutual option attached to Mattingly's contract to keep him through the 2022 season.

Mattingly is in the middle of his sixth season in charge of the Marlins and held a record of 345-446 with the club as of the start of Thursday's matchup. Per Baseball-Reference, he holds the record for most career wins as a Miami manager, and he earned National League Manager of the Year honors for the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign.

"Donnie has been steady at the helm, and I think that's one of his greatest attributes," Ng said during her announcement. "He's incredibly patient. I think he's got a great way with the young players. He's very positive with them."

At the start of Thursday's action, the Marlins were 38-47 and in fifth place in the National League East standings, eight games behind the first-place New York Mets.
