Marlins reel in former Giants manager for new role

The Miami Marlins have agreed to hire former San Francisco Giants manager Gabe Kapler as their next assistant general manager.

The Giants fired Kapler from his managerial role in late September with three games left in the 2023 regular season as the team faded out of the playoff picture. The former outfielder was completing his fourth year in the Bay Area, a run that included an NL West divisional crown in 2021, but subsequent elimination in the NLDS by the rival Los Angeles Dodgers.

Kapler (who managed the Philadelphia Phillies in 2018 and 2019) won the 2021 NL Manager of the Year Award and finished his tenure with San Francisco with a 295-248 record.

Miami's front office has undergone a significant shakeup this offseason, parting ways with general manager Kim Ng in October. The Marlins reportedly offered the 55-year-old a contract extension beyond the 2024 mutual option that she declined.

Soon after her departure became official, it was reported that the organization wanted to hire a president of baseball operations over Ng, which led to her declining the option and extension offer.

Ng was hired in November 2020 and became the first woman to hold the GM post of a men's team in any of the four major North American sports. She was the first Asian-American GM in MLB history as well.

The Marlins won only 63 games in 2018 and 57 in 2019 before making the playoffs during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign. Under Ng, Miami went 67-95 in 2021 and saw a slight improvement to 69-93 in 2022, before making the playoffs with an 84-78 mark in 2023.

The team was swept by the Phillies in the NL wild-card round but was arguably the biggest surprise in MLB this year. Marlins manager Skip Schumaker (hired by Ng in October 2022) captured the NL Manager of the Year Award in November.
