Marlins strike a deal with division rival

Only half a game out of a wild card spot in the National League, the Miami Marlins made a trade Thursday evening with the New York Mets for reliever David Robertson.

After managing only 19 appearances from 2019-2021, Robertson had a bounce-back season in 2022. He has followed that up with another stellar season this year. At 4-2 with a 2.05 ERA, he was 14 for 17 on save opportunities for the Mets after taking over for injured closer Edwin Diaz.

In his 15th season, Robertson will bring 41 games of postseason experience with him to a young Marlins team looking to make the playoffs for just the fourth time in team history.

Joining a bullpen loaded with left-handers, the Marlins were in desperate need of experienced pitching from the right side and Robertson gives first-year manager Skip Schumaker a veteran he can turn to without hesitation.

In return for Robertson, the Marlins shipped out their No. 18 and No. 21 ranked prospects that the Mets were enamored with but who are both a few years away from contributing at the major league level.

The Marlins still figure to be buyers before the trade deadline with the need for more pitching and an upgrade at third base, with off-season signing Jean Segura struggling to produce in 2023.

The Mets are in the middle of one of their most disappointing seasons, and figure to be sellers at the deadline with pitcher Justin Verlander's name even starting to be rumored as available
