Marlins trade veteran IF Jonathan Villar to Blue Jays

The Toronto Blue Jays are adding some depth at the trade deadline as they gear up for a postseason run.

According to ESPN's Jeff Passan, the Blue Jays have acquired speedy utility man Jonathan Villar from the Miami Marlins

Villar, 29, is a versatile defender who could potentially fill the hole at shortstop with Bo Bichette out of the lineup dealing with a sprained right knee. He also played second base and center field for the Marlins this season.

This season, Villar is hitting .272 with nine RBI, two home runs and a .688 OPS in 29 games. He also leads the league in steals with nine.

Joining the Blue Jays means Villar will be back in the AL East after spending the 2017 and 2018 campaigns with the Baltimore Orioles. He'll become a free agent after the 2020 season.
