Last week, it was announced that some major changes would be made on the St. Louis Cardinals‘ coaching staff.

Hitting coach Jeff Albert, bench coach Skip Schumaker, pitching coach Mike Maddux, and bullpen coach Bryan Eversgerd are all departing this offseason, creating some openings on the St. Louis coaching staff.

One name that has been brought up by several Cardinals fans is former slugger Matt Holliday, who is currently the hitting coach for Oklahoma State.

However, he recently joined a podcast and talked about the possibility of joining the Cardinals’ staff as either a hitting coach or a bench coach.

This has several Cardinals fans excited.

Could Holliday Return To Cards As Coach?

Holliday would be a great fit in any role with the Cardinals.

St. Louis is where he played the vast majority of his career after being traded there in 2009 from the Oakland Athletics.

Holliday was a member of the 2011 World Series Championship team and was a cornerstone in the Cards’ lineup for many years.

As a former player, he would likely gain the respect of the team instantly, very similarly to how Albert Pujols did when he made his return to St. Louis.

He also would have two former teammates on the roster in Nolan Arenado and Adam Wainwright.

The 42-year-old was a seven time All-Star and a four-time Silver Slugger.

He hit for a career .299 average and hit 316 home runs, while also posting a WAR of 44.5.

But with some coaching experience already under his belt, Holliday would be a great fit in any coaching role for St. Louis.
