Mets ace Jacob deGrom begins season on 10-day IL, could return before June

It was already known that New York Mets ace and two-time Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom was going to miss the start of the 2022 MLB regular season and, ultimately, a "significant amount of time" with a stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder that caused him to be shut down ahead of the final weekend of spring training.

The Mets may have quietly revealed some good news during their roster announcement before Thursday's Opening Day clash at the division-rival Washington Nationals.

Per The Associated Press (h/t ESPN), deGrom went on the 10-day injured list Thursday. The Athletic's Tim Britton added.

It was previously believed that deGrom would remain sidelined through the end of May, if not longer. The 33-year-old dealt with at least six documented injury setbacks last year and still hasn't pitched in a meaningful game since July 7 because of a reported low-grade tear in the ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, so expect the Mets to be extra cautious about his return to the bump.

As for Opening Day, 26-year-old Tylor Megill is receiving the ball from Mets manager Buck Showalter while three-time Cy Young Award winner Max Scherzer works to fully recover from a hamstring problem. Scherzer is hoping to make his Mets debut Friday in Washington.
