Mets ace Jacob deGrom resumes throwing, working toward possible September return

It appears the results of the latest MRI on New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom were encouraging.

According to SNY, deGrom resumed throwing activities in the Citi Field outfield on Wednesday.

Mets acting general manager Zack Scott told reporters Tuesday that Wednesday's examination would ideally clear the 33-year-old to start a throwing program as he works to recover from the lingering elbow inflammation that's kept him sidelined since the end of the All-Star break last month. Last week, the Mets moved deGrom to the 60-day injured list, meaning he is now ineligible to return before Sept. 13.

deGrom last faced opposing MLB batters on July 7 and is 7-2 with a 1.08 ERA and 0.55 WHIP in 15 starts this season.

It seems unlikely deGrom would return to action until the final week of September at the earliest. The Mets, meanwhile, were crushed 8-0 at home by the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday evening and fell to 61-64 on the campaign. They remain six-and-a-half games back of the first-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings and could be mathematically eliminated from the playoffs by the time deGrom is cleared to make his next big league start.

The Mets finish the season in Atlanta against the Braves on Oct. 3.
