Mets ace Jacob deGrom roughed up in potential final rehab start

Reports surfaced last week that New York Mets ace Jacob deGrom would complete a hoped-to-be final rehab appearance before making his 2022 MLB season debut coming off the stress reaction in the scapula of his pitching shoulder that first popped up late in spring training.

That outing did not go exactly as planned.

As noted by SNY's Danny Abriano and Elizabeth Muratore of the MLB website, deGrom started Wednesday afternoon for the Triple-A Syracuse Mets against the Omaha Storm Chasers and allowed four runs on two hits and three walks with six strikeouts across four innings of work. The two-time National League Cy Young Award winner surrendered a pair of home runs in the second inning but ultimately settled down for the third and fourth frames.

In total, he tossed 67 pitches, 41 of which were strikes.

Previously, deGrom completed three rehab starts but then had a throwing session pushed back last week from Tuesday to Thursday after he reported muscle soreness in his right shoulder. It's possible the 34-year-old could be penciled into the big-league rotation for a matchup at the Washington Nationals between next Monday and Wednesday, but the Mets will likely first evaluate how he's feeling following his latest start.

Elbow issues cost deGrom the second half of last season, and he still hasn't pitched in a meaningful MLB contest since July 7, 2021. Without his services, the first-place Mets began Wednesday at 60-37 and with a two-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.
