Mets ace Jacob deGrom to go on IL with right side tightness

The New York Mets understandably aren't taking any risks with ace and two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom this time around.

On Monday, the Mets confirmed deGrom is officially going on the injured list tomorrow retroactive to today because of what's being described as right side tightness. The 32-year-old was scratched from a start last week with inflammation in his right lat but returned for Sunday's outing versus the Arizona Diamondbacks. However, he exited that game after only five innings and was visibly dealing with discomfort as he left the mound.

David Adler of the MLB website adds that the Mets are hopeful deGrom will miss only one start and could pitch against the Miami Marlins at some point between May 21 through May 23 after an MRI showed no structural damage. Previously, Dr. Jesse Morse of The Fantasy Doctors explained the Mets should have sat deGrom for at least one or two scheduled starts so his inflammation didn't worsen:

DeGrom heads to the IL leading all of MLB with a 0.68 ERA. Per ESPN stats, he's fifth in the big leagues with 65 strikeouts on the campaign.
