Mets announce Francisco Lindor contract extension

Word broke last Wednesday night that four-time All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor had agreed to a 10-year contract extension that could be worth up to $341 million with the New York Mets.

The Mets confirmed that deal on Monday.

"Today is a great day for the Mets, Mets fans everywhere, Francisco, his teammates and his family," team owner Steve Cohen said in the prepared statement. "Having spent time with Francisco during spring training, he’s an extraordinary talent on the field and an exceptional person off it. This is a great start to opening the season and a big step toward our pursuit of sustained winning… and championships."

Team president Sandy Alderson added: "Francisco brings so much to the Mets — as a player and leader. His reputation for both preceded him when he joined us and he’s exceeded all of our expectations. His abilities and presence will be critical to our success going forward. We’re thrilled that Francisco will be a Met for years to come."

Cohen and Alderson also spoke with media members on Monday:

"So much thanks has to first go to Steve and Alex Cohen, as well as Sandy for their hard work and commitment to winning," Lindor explained. "I’m thrilled and blessed to part of this organization for years to come. Everyone has welcomed me and my family with open arms. I’m beyond excited to go out and play for Mets fans and help bring a championship to Queens."

On Thursday, the 27-year-old said he was "honored," "blessed," and "humbled" upon receiving the contract. Lindor and right-handed pitcher Carlos Carrasco joined the Mets via a trade with the Cleveland Indians on Jan. 7.

The Mets had their season-opening series versus the Washington Nationals postponed due to COVID-19 issues impacting Washington. New York begins the campaign Monday evening at the Philadelphia Phillies.
