Mets catcher James McCann to miss roughly six weeks, will have hand surgery

The New York Mets improved to a National-League-East leading 22-11 via Thursday's 4-1 win at the division-rival Washington Nationals. As Pat Ragazzo noted for Fan Nation's Inside the Mets, though, catcher James McCann wasn't part of the action and missed his second straight game due to what was referred to as left wrist soreness. McCann even said he could've played on Wednesday and Thursday.

His situation changed quite a bit ahead of Friday's home series opener against the Seattle Mariners.

Per The Athletic and other outlets, McCann suffered a fractured left hamate bone and will require surgery to repair the issue. He is expected to miss roughly six weeks, and SNY's James O'Connell adds the Mets placed the 31-year-old on the 10-day injured list.

In a corresponding roster move, New York recalled catcher Patrick Mazeika from Triple-A Syracuse.

McCann hits the IL slashing .196/.266/.286 with one home run and six RBI on the season, so the hope is this procedure will ultimately help him reclaim his best form at the plate.

Tomas Nido will likely serve as New York's first-choice option at the position moving forward. Nido began Friday batting .204 with five RBI this season.
