Mets considered a reunion with Yoenis Cespedes during season's first half?

Former New York Mets slugger Yoenis Cespedes didn't take an at-bat during the 2019 MLB season in part because of what the New York Post reported to be a fractured ankle linked with an encounter with a wild boar at his Florida ranch, and he appeared in only eight games during the pandemic-shortened 2020 campaign before he opted out without warning.

With the Mets facing numerous injury setbacks during the first half of the current season, at least somebody within the organization considered a reunion involving the 35-year-old.

The Post's Ken Davidoff reported ahead of Tuesday's All-Star Game that the Mets reached out to Cespedes' representatives, but the talks went nowhere because the veteran doesn't want to put pen to paper on only a minor-league deal. Cespedes hasn't played since he hit .161 with two home runs and four RBI last summer, but he held a showcase for teams in Florida this past March and reportedly impressed some attendees.

The Mets entered the All-Star break in first place in the National League East with a 47-40 record and will be hoping to avoid any similar "break glass in case of emergency" situations over the next several months and through the fall.
