Will Mets prospect Tim Tebow crack the team's 60-man player pool? Jim Rassol-USA TODAY Sports

Mets considering Tim Tebow for spot in 60-man player pool

Tim Tebow was left off the New York Mets summer roster but general manager Brodie Van Wagenen says the team is still considering the former NFL quarterback for a spot in the 60-man player pool.

"We do still have 10 spots that we haven’t made final determinations on, who we will be bringing," Van Wagenen told Syracuse.com. "He was in camp with us early on in camp last spring. He was sent out to minor league camp a couple weeks into it. But he, like many of the other players that were in spring training for us, will be in consideration to bring back. But we haven’t made those final decisions."

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, each team will have "player pools," which will be made up of 60 players who will attend training camp with the team and be available for the team throughout the season instead of the standard system of calling up players from the minor leagues. The Mets currently have 50 of 60 slots in their player pool filled but with 10 spots left, Tebow's major league dream isn't over yet.

The only problem? Tebow's skills on the baseball diamond are questionable, at best. In 1,048 plate appearances, Tebow is batting .223 with 18 home runs and 107 RBI. And at age 32, it's hard to imagine he's going to be radically improving his game all of the sudden. But the truth is Tebow remains a big name and Van Wagenen may be considering him purely because he would generate interest from fans across the country.
