Mets designate eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano for assignment

The New York Mets designated eight-time All-Star Robinson Cano for assignment, multiple sources confirmed on Monday morning.

The move corresponds with MLB teams needing to trim their rosters down to 26 players, but it also signals the end to what has been a tumultuous union between Cano and the Mets.

The 39-year-old veteran, who is owed $24 million each of the next two seasons, has struggled in the early part of the season, hitting just .195 with one home run and three RBI in 41 at-bats. The five-time Silver Slugger has only played 168 games since joining the Mets in 2018 due to serving suspensions for using PEDs.

The potential future Hall of Famer has slashed .302/.352/.490 over his 17-season career with 335 home runs and 1,305 RBI.

The Mets also optioned right-handed pitcher Yoan Lopez to triple-A as part of the roster-refining process.
