Mets' Edwin Diaz went back to iconic walkout song thanks to wife
New York Mets closer Edwin Diaz has gone viral multiple times throughout the 2022 MLB season, both for his ability to make batters look silly and also because of his beloved "Narco" walkout song created by Blasterjaxx and Timmy Trumpet that causes fans to rise to their feet and that has also changed at least one couple's mind regarding a wedding reception entrance tune.
Per ESPN stats, Diaz began Friday tied for third in all of MLB with 26 saves this season, and he was holding a 1.39 ERA and 0.86 WHIP. The 28-year-old wasn't always a hit among New York supporters, though, as he initially struggled mightily after he was traded from the Seattle Mariners to the Mets following the 2018 campaign.
As noted by Matt Monagan of the MLB website, Diaz posted a 5.59 ERA with seven losses and seven blown saves during the 2019 season which became the worst of his career. Perhaps coincidentally, the right-hander had been using Miky Woodz's "No Hay Limite" that year during walkouts but then received some solid advice from a close confidant the subsequent offseason.
"My wife told me, 'Hey, you should use that trumpet song,'" Diaz explained about the entrance theme he previously utilized with Seattle. "And I said, 'OK, let's do it.'"
The rest, as they say, is history. Diaz has overwhelmed batters so much throughout 2022 that Anthony DiComo of the MLB website recently named him a candidate to win the National League Cy Young Award.
"I mean, I could say 'yes,'" Diaz answered while laughing when asked if "Narco" helped him turn his fortunes around.
Meanwhile, there is talk that Blasterjaxx and Trumpet could eventually journey to Citi Field to both perform their hit in front of the Mets faithful and also catch Diaz in action -- assuming he pitches that day, of course.
"Oh man, if they can play the trumpet when I walk in, that would be fun," Diaz told Monagan.
