Ahead of the 2024 season, the New York Mets received word that pitcher Kodai Senga was dealing with shoulder trouble and would miss extended time. On Tuesday, New York received some good news regarding Senga’s (as well as Tylor Megill’s) progress, per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com:
“Mets rehab updates: Kodai Senga (shoulder) will throw a bullpen session in the coming days, followed by possibly another live BP before going on a rehab assignment. Tylor Megill (shoulder), who threw four dominant innings at AAA today, will make another rehab start Sunday.”
It was previously reported that New York Mets star pitcher Kodai Senga was dealing with arm fatigue before spring training. But in late February, his injury was ruled as a moderate shoulder strain. He was expected to be New York’s ace in 2024 following his All-Star rookie season.
The 31-year-old recorded a 2.98 ERA and 202 strikeouts in 2023. He was one of the few bright spots for a Mets team that fell well below expectations.
The right-handed Megill left his first start of the year with a shoulder injury. Megill underwent an MRI to determine the extent of the injury. The Mets subsequently placed him on the injured list with a right shoulder strain of his own.
Outside of Megill and Senga, the Mets turned to Luis Severino, Jose Quintana and Sean Manaea, among others, for their starting pitching duties. Having to dig into another piece of their starting pitching depth was not what the Mets hoped they’d have to do this early in the season.
Regardless, after a terrible start, New York has bounced back to a 17-18 record. The Mets did hit a rough stretch, losing seven of 10 games before taking on the Cardinals this week.
Mets get back to winning ways vs. Cardinals
Sean Manaea (2-1) pitched six effective innings and Edwin Díaz rebounded from a rare blown save Sunday as the Mets bounced back from a weekend sweep at Tampa Bay.
Brandon Nimmo hit the tiebreaking homer in the seventh inning that sent New York to a 4-3 victory over the St. Louis Cardinals on Monday night.
Díaz worked a 1-2-3 inning for his fifth save in six opportunities. The star closer gave up Randy Arozarena’s tying solo homer on a full-count pitch with two outs in the ninth Sunday, and the Rays went on to win 7-6 in 10 innings.
Before that, Díaz had converted 26 consecutive save chances dating to 2022 — which was the longest active streak in the majors.
Nimmo went deep off Andrew Kittredge with one out in the seventh, putting the Mets up 4-3 with his second go-ahead homer this season. New York’s leadoff man finished with two hits and scored twice. He is 13 for 41 with two home runs and seven RBI over the last 11 games.
