Mets' Jacob deGrom suffers setback, likely out until September

It was less than a full week ago that the New York Mets were hopeful two-time National League Cy Young Award winner Jacob deGrom would return to the rotation in early August from the forearm tightness that's kept him out of action since the All-Star break.

A Thursday bullpen session has apparently changed that plan.

Anthony DiComo of the league's website reports the Mets are shutting deGrom down from throwing for at least two weeks after he suffered additional inflammation in his right arm. As a result, it's unlikely the 33-year-old will make a big-league start before September.

It's yet another brutal blow for the former NL Most Valuable Player candidate who has dealt with right lat tightness, right side tightness, right flexor tendinitis and right shoulder issues this season alone. He's 7-2 with a 1.08 ERA and 0.55 WHIP on the campaign.

The Mets acquired both All-Star shortstop Javier Baez and right-handed pitcher Trevor Williams from the Chicago Cubs ahead of the Friday trade deadline. Williams is 4-2 with a 5.06 ERA in 13 games and 12 starts this season.

Williams is no direct replacement for deGrom, and some will wonder following this development if the Mets should've been willing to part with additional prospects to obtain a more proven starter before the deadline.
