Mets left fielder J.D. Davis has opened up about his involvement in the Astros' sign-stealing scandal. Wendell Cruz-USA TODAY Sports

Before he was traded to the New York Mets, J.D. Davis won a World Series ring as a rookie with the Houston Astros, who were cheating the entire time. On Friday, Davis shared that he was embarrassed to have been part of the Astros’ sign-stealing scandal, calling it “terrible for the game of baseball,” per Bob Nightengale of USA Today Sports.

This is truly the only correct way to respond. It sure as heck beats what the Astros did just one day ago, when the franchise’s press conference went sideways in the worst possible way.

Everyone who was even remotely aware of the Astros’ sign-stealing scheme and didn’t speak up should be ashamed. Players who participated should have been disciplined, and the Astros should be stripped of their World Series title. But MLB has applied relatively soft discipline to this despicable scandal, making itself look weak and spineless in the process.
