Mets' Jeff McNeil day-to-day with hamstring tightness

Fans of the New York Mets were left holding their breaths after star second baseman and utility man Jeff McNeil left Monday's 6-0 win over the Miami Marlins with what was later confirmed to be tightness in his right hamstring. He experienced the tightness while taking home plate following a wild pitch in the bottom of the fourth inning of the victory.

McNeil was left out of the lineup for Tuesday's game at the Houston Astros, but manager Buck Showalter didn't seem too concerned about the issue.

According to ESPN and The Associated Press, Showalter told reporters on Tuesday afternoon that McNeil's MRI revealed "good news." Showalter offered no other specifics about the setback, and McNeil noted a trainer told him "everything looks great" coming off the MRI.

McNeil is considered day-to-day, and his status for Wednesday's matchup in Houston wasn't known as of early Tuesday evening.

Per ESPN stats, McNeil leads the Mets among eligible players with a .327 batting average and also has four home runs and 33 RBIs this season.

Additionally, the first-place Mets are hoping to have ace Max Scherzer back in the rotation for Sunday's game at the Marlins. Scherzer hasn't pitched in a big-league contest since he suffered a strained left oblique on May 18 but was making a planned rehab start for Double-A Binghamton on Tuesday.

New York (45-24) began the day with a 5.5-game lead over the second-place Atlanta Braves in the National League East standings.
