The New York Mets made impressive moves on Wednesday night, signing Luis Severino and Joey Wendle. While those aren't the moves that are going to win the Mets a World Series, Severino and Wendle are serviceable professionals who should do their jobs in New York.

Mets fans continue seeking a huge free agent signing or trade.

Steve Cohen has made those moves during past offseasons, but will he do so again this time around?

That question remains to be answered. However, New York could decide to go after Juan Soto. Even if they don't plan on contending this season, Soto's someone that the Mets can have around for 10-plus years and be the focal point of their lineup. If a deal does come up, it's one Cohen is likely going to make. It shouldn't be viewed as a one-year thing and something that they're fine with missing out on.

Mike Petriello of MLB.com lists the Mets as the fifth-best fit for Soto.

"Given their willingness to spend and their hopes to erase the disappointing taste of the 2023 season, the Mets are going to be included on any list for any free agent. The baseball fit is obvious, because they don’t have a left fielder, their lineup is thin and they could easily afford to extend him right away. The flip side: They need to worry about pitching even more than their hitting. They also have their own star situation to sort out with trade rumors circling around Pete Alonso, who reaches free agency at the same time Soto does."

With the prospects that New York received during the 2023 trade deadline, we could likely see one of them moved to get this deal done.

That includes their No. 1 overall prospect, Luisangel Acuna, and their No. 2 overall prospect Drew Gilbert.

The Mets continue to be a team to watch if Soto does become available.
