Mets owner says he is not making changes despite disappointing start

On the list of biggest disappointments in Major League Baseball this season the New York Mets have to be at the top of the list.

Despite their disappointing start and seven-game losing streak entering Saturday, owner Steve Cohen said he is not ready to make major changes because that is not the proper response to the situation.

Here is part of what Cohen had to say on Saturday via the New York Post:

“When things get really bad, I’m not going to blow up,” Cohen said. “I don’t think that’s the proper response. I don’t think it solves anything, other than it gives people a one-day story. But it doesn’t really solve anything. There’s plenty of blame to go around from a performance point of view. So blowing up, I’m not sure it solves anything. It would demonstrate, ‘Oh, he really cares. He’s one of us.’ But the reality is it’s not going to solve our problems. And I think in some ways it can be demotivating."

That came just one day after the Mets lost an ugly 14-7 game to the Pittsburgh Pirates to extend their losing streak to seven games. That loss dropped the Mets to a stunning 30-34, putting them in fourth place in the National League East and already 9.5 games out of first place.

The Mets won 101 games a year ago and made the National League playoffs. They entered the 2023 season as a World Series contender on paper, especially after putting together a roster that boasted a league-high $364M.

For that price, the playoffs should be automatic and anything sort of a postseason series win would have to be disappointing.

More than two months into the season the Mets are going to have to fight just to make the playoffs.

There have been plenty of issues that go beyond manager Buck Showalter and his staff.

Superstar closer Edwin Diaz was lost for the season during a fluke injury suffered during the World Baseball Classic, while big-money starters Max Scherzer and Justin Verlander have showed their age and not yet been as dominant as hoped.

More recently, power hitting first basemen Pete Alonso was sidelined for several weeks after getting hit on the wrist by a pitch in Atlanta.

Saturday did bring some better news for the Mets as they were able to get a 5-1 win over the Pirates to snap their seven-game losing streak. They were able to do that despite making three errors in the game.
