Mets place left-hander David Peterson on 10-day IL with oblique strain

The New York Mets placed left-hander David Peterson on the 10-day injured list after being removed from his start against the Atlanta Braves Wednesday in the fourth inning due to side soreness.

Mets manager Luis Rojas said Saturday that Peterson is dealing with an oblique strain, and it's unclear when he might return. While Rojas said oblique injuries typically take eight weeks to heal, the Mets believe he can return sooner.

The Mets have dealt with several injuries to pitchers this season, so it won't be good if Peterson misses an extended period of time.

Carlos Carrasco is working his way back from a hamstring injury, and Noah Syndergaard is still rehabbing from Tommy John surgery. Not to mention, Jacob deGrom, Marcus Stroman and Taijuan Walker have each struggled with injuries this season as well.

Peterson, 25, hasn't been very sharp in his second season with the Mets. The California native is 2-6 with a 5.54 ERA, 1.395 WHIP and 69 strikeouts in 66.2 innings.

Still, his presence in the rotation is important, and the Mets could struggle on the mound in his absence.
