Mets provide update on Pete Alonso after brutal hit-by-pitch

The New York Mets provided an encouraging update on slugger Pete Alonso, who left Wednesday night's game against the Atlanta Braves after being hit on the wrist with a pitch.

X-rays on Alonso's left wrist following the HBP came back negative. The first baseman was diagnosed with a wrist contusion and is listed officially as day-to-day, per the Mets

In the top of the first inning, Alonso took a 97 MPH Charlie Morton fastball to the wrist, crumpling to the ground in pain.

Following the contest, manager Buck Showalter said Alonso would undergo a CT scan on Thursday. Showalter added that the team is acting cautious with the slugger due to his history of injuries resulting from being hit by pitches. In 2022, a Yu Darvish fastball struck Alonso in the left hand, but he missed only one game. In 2021, Alonso missed nine games with a right-hand sprain after being hit in the palm with a pitch.

The timing of Wednesday's incident is curious, as there could be a bit of bad blood brewing between the National League East rivals. On Tuesday, Alonso homered off Braves pitcher Bryce Elder before shouting from the dugout, "Throw it again."

The beef continued after the Braves took a late lead, resulting in some jeers thrown Alonso's way from Tyle Matzek and others in Atlanta's dugout.

The Braves faithful certainly didn't forget Alonso's taunt, as the crowd lustily cheered after Morton's pitch made contact on Wednesday. So, we likely haven't seen the last of this brouhaha.

The Mets and Braves will meet again to close out the series on Thursday, where further shenanigans could occur. After Thursday, the two sides won't play against one another for more than a month, though, before meeting for a four-game set in New York beginning on Aug. 12. Another three-game set will follow in Atlanta starting on Aug. 21.
