Mets reportedly 'checked in' with Noah Syndergaard's agents regarding extension

Extension talks with Francisco Lindor and Michael Conforto have been garnering the most attention surrounding the New York Mets. However, another essential player also needs a new contract following the 2021 campaign.

Now that discussions with Lindor and Conforto have been ongoing, the Mets are shifting their focus to Noah Syndergaard, who is playing the 2021 campaign on a one-year, $9.7 million deal.

According to MLB Network's Jon Heyman, the Mets have checked in with Syndergaard's agents to see what his price tag might be. However, the right-hander's price could be "tough to pinpoint," Heyman says, because he is coming off Tommy John surgery and hasn't been able to pitch in a live game during spring training.

It's not surprising that the Mets are pushing to get a deal done with Syndergaard. Marcus Stroman is also set to become a free agent after the 2021 campaign, and if both players were to exit via free agency, New York would have a massive hole in its starting rotation behind Jacob deGrom and Carlos Carrasco.

The 28-year-old has been a staple in the Mets' lineup since 2015. In five seasons with the franchise, Syndergaard is 47-30 with a 3.31 ERA and 1.161 WHIP. He was named an All-Star in 2016 and finished eighth in Cy Young voting that year.
