The New York Mets recently made a decision to both instill trust in top catching prospect Francisco Álvarez and elect to ride with Omar Narváez over longtime Mets backstop Tomas Nido -- who has bounced around from the Mets to their minor league affiliates since 2017.

The decision to roll with Álvarez and Narváez as the catching tandem forced the Mets to designate Nido for assignment on Monday. Fortunately, New York might be able to get something out of the decision.

"Hearing that the expectation is the Mets will work out a trade that involves Tomas Nido," The New York Post's Mike Puma tweeted Monday.

The Mets have a few days to trade Nido to a team looking for a defensive-minded catcher. If they fail to do so, he'll either enter free agency or head back to Triple-A Syracuse -- likely the former.

The 29-year-old backstop is hitting .125 without logging an extra-base hit. He has a shockingly low .278 OPS and -21 OPS+ in 22 games. That might be the worst offensive stat line I've ever seen but the sample size is small and he's not in the big leagues for his abilities at the plate.

If an opposing team does inquire about Nido, it will be for his elite framing, steady pitching calling and solid pop times. Still, the Mets would at best receive either cash or a player to be named later unless they use this window to create a bigger trade and attach other players.
