The New York Mets could end up making an addition in the not-so-distant future.

New York has been linked to a handful of right-handed bats but hasn't opted to make a move yet. Many have speculated that J.D. Martinez could be an option for the club but it's unclear how serious the talks are.

Another player who has popped up recently as a possible option is veteran utility man J.D. Davis. He recently was released by the San Francisco Giants and already has three-plus years of experience with the Mets.

It's expected that Brett Baty and Mark Vientos will have larger roles in 2024, but the club reportedly is showing "real interest" in a reunion with Davis, according to the New York Post's Joel Sherman.

"Talk to a Mets official and they will publicly praise the work of Brett Baty and Mark Vientos," Sherman said. "They will say both are making the team out of spring training regardless of if they make a late addition. And yet, they are, at minimum, considering a late addition.

"Top team executives met again Thursday to discuss if J.D. Davis fit their roster and 2024 agenda — and they are not doing it just as a due diligence exercise. They have real interest in a reunion with the righty-swinger, who was officially released on Monday by the (San Francisco Giants) not long after they signed Matt Chapman to play third base. The Mets had spoken multiple times to Davis’ representative, Matt Hannaford. A decision where Davis goes is expected in the next few days."

Davis impressed last season with the Giants and clubbed 18 home runs and drove in 69 RBIs in 144 games. He saw time at both first and third base as well as designated hitter.
