The New York Mets certainly are in flux right now.
New York was one of the best teams in baseball in 2022 but that success didn't carry over to the 2023 campaign. Many expected the Mets to contend for a World Series title this season -- especially after landing star hurler Justin Verlander -- but the club never was able to get on track and was the biggest seller ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline.
The Mets are going to look different next season. That isn't surprising and likely is an understatement but changes are coming. One question mark the team will have to address is the future of manager Buck Showalter. The veteran manager is under contract for the 2024 campaign, but there have been rumblings that a change could be made. Although this is the case, Mets star shortstop Francisco Lindor made it clear he wants Showalter back next season, according to the New York Post's Jon Heyman.
“I think Buck is the right man for the job,” Francisco Lindor said as transcribed by Heyman. “I’m a big fan. I’m a big supporter. He has done a great job of controlling the narrative and controlling what goes on in the clubhouse.”
Lindor fairly blames injuries and underperformance for the Mets’ surprising also-ran status. “It comes down to the players on the field, I include myself."
New York already has made a massive change by bringing in former Milwaukee Brewers executive David Stearns as the club's president of baseball operations and there likely will be more moves to come. If Lindor has his way, the manager position won't be one of those changes.
