The New York Mets have a very interesting offseason ahead of them.

New York already has signed former All-Star Joey Wendle and Luis Severino and likely have much more up its sleeve. New York has been linked to multiple stars this offseason and it wouldn't be too surprising to see it make a few major moves and make its way back to the postseason next year.

The biggest internal decision the Mets need to make this offseason revolves around the future of superstar slugger Pete Alonso. He will be a free agent at the end of the 2024 season and there have been rumblings that the two sides are discussing a contract extension.

There also have been rumors that he could be traded this offseason and there even were trade discussions ahead of the 2023 Major League Baseball Trade Deadline. The Chicago Cubs have been mentioned as a possible fit, but the New York Post's Jon Heyman threw cold water on the idea that Alonso will be moved.

"The Cubs are looking at Matt Chapman and their own Cody Bellinger, but waiting on Ohtani first," Heyman said. "The Cubs also have interest in Rhys Hoskins since Pete Alonso probably isn’t going anywhere."

Alonso has developed into one of the best sluggers in all of baseball. Plus, he is just 28 years old and is a homegrown star. Losing Alonso through a trade or free agency would be devastating but it sounds like Mets fans don't have to worry about that possibility in the short-term, at least.
