Mets to decide on Luis Rojas after end of season

It was reported in the first half of August that the slumping New York Mets were sticking with manager Luis Rojas likely through at least the rest of the season. That, of course, was before big-name acquisitions Javier Baez and Francisco Lindor had to apologize for a "thumbs-down" celebration used by players in reaction to fans booing the Mets during home games, and before acting general manager Zack Scott was placed on administrative leave until further notice following his arrest on a driving while intoxicated charge.

As Justin Toscano explained for NorthJersey.com, Rojas' contract has an option for the 2022 campaign, and Mets president Sandy Alderson somewhat danced around his manager's future while speaking with reporters ahead of Tuesday's game at the Miami Marlins.

"I think that’s a decision that will be made at the end of the year or thereafter," Alderson said about Rojas' deal, per Alex Smith of SNY. "I look at the first half of the season or the first half through the All-Star break, and I think Luis did an exceptional job keeping this team afloat in spite of all the injuries and in some cases underperformance. Not surprisingly in some minds, we hit a rough stretch against some good teams, but we’ve rebounded from that.

"So I think that the credit for that resides among the players, and I think to some extent it resides within the coaching staff as well. We’ll see what happens and we’ll make a decision at the end of the season."

The Mets have been plagued by injuries all season and have been without ace Jacob deGrom since the conclusion of the All-Star break because of what Alderson admitted on Tuesday was a sprained ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow that has apparently healed. If Alderson and owner Steve Cohen rebuild the Mets' front office this winter as expected, logic suggests Scott's full-time replacement will want to hire a chosen manager to replace Rojas unless he guides the Amazin's on a winning streak and to a playoff berth by the night of Oct. 3.
