Mets to pursue a starting pitcher ahead of trade deadline?

During a Tuesday appearance on the "Big Time Baseball" podcast, acting New York Mets general manager Zack Scott suggested that ace Jacob deGrom may only spend a short time on the injured list due to the right forearm tightness fans first learned about over the weekend.

Per the official MLB website, Scott also confirmed during that discussion that he's shopping for a starting pitcher ahead of the July 30 trade deadline.

Interestingly, Scott seemed to pour cold water over the Mets acquiring a pitcher with years of control past this season, which would seem to take Jose Berrios of the Minnesota Twins off the table. Berrios is eligible for free agency after the 2022 campaign but was linked with the Mets by Pat Ragazzo of Sports Illustrated on Monday.

Veteran right-hander Carlos Carrasco is completing rehab assignments with Triple-A Syracuse as he works to recover from the torn hamstring that's kept him away from the big-league Mets all season, and the club remains hopeful Noah Syndergaard will be good to go for September. Syndergaard hasn't pitched since having Tommy John surgery in March 2020.

SNY's Andy Martino believes the Mets could target Tyler Anderson of the Pittsburgh Pirates before the deadline. Anderson began Tuesday evening holding a 5-8 record with a 4.35 ERA on the season.
