The Miami Marlins' starting rotation took another hit on Tuesday, with manager Skip Schumaker announcing that left-hander Braxton Garrett is going to start the season on the injured list.

Per Jordan McPherson, who covers the Marlins:

#Marlins manager Skip Schumaker said Braxton Garrett is unlikely for the Opening Day roster. Garrett, who dealt with shoulder soreness early in camp, is throwing a bullpen today but still hasn’t progressed to live BP.

“He feels great now, but I think it's dangerous when you're trying to push a guy to make an Opening Day roster.” -#Marlins manager Skip Schumaker on Braxton Garrett

The Marlins are already out Sandy Alcantara for the year after he underwent Tommy John surgery this offseason, so a very good rotation is all of a sudden thinned out. With Garrett out, it looks like the rotation will consist of Eury Perez, Jesus Luzardo, and Edward Cabrera for sure. AJ Puk, who is converting back to a starter, also figures to have an in at this point.

The 26-year-old Garrett has spent part of four seasons at the major league level, all with the Marlins. He had a breakout season in 2023, going 9-7 with a 3.66 ERA. His stability was a big reason why the Marlins ended up getting to the playoffs as a wild card team in the National League.

Lifetime, he's 14-17 with a 3.87 ERA. Miami will open up the season on March 28 at home against the Pittsburgh Pirates. Luzardo would figure to get the ball for Miami in the opener.
